Capture On Touch Lite

With MDT 2013, it’s easy to do a Sysprep and Capture of your Windows client PC. I will try to explain step by step how you create the task “Sysprep and Capture” and how you execute it on a client PC.

CaptureOnTouch Lite is a scanning application that comes pre-installed in the scanner. It can be used on a computer that does not have the scanner driver installed. Click the Select document and Output panels, and then click the Scan button to scan the document. You can select the scan method according to the document type and purpose of use before scanning. As you can see, the CaptureOnTouch software that comes with the Canon imageFORMULA scanners (in my case, the Canon P–215) gives you a lot of flexibility for your particular scanning workflow. First, you need to create a Task Sequence with Sysprep and Capture. This is really easy. In the deployment workbench, just right-click in the Task Sequence list to create a new task sequence and create a Sysprep and Capture task. You will have to select an operating system when you create this task.

When this is done, you can run this task on any Windows operating system.
Go to a client PC in your network and open up your deployment Share folder with windows explorer: ServerNameDeploymentShare$. Now you should be in your deployment share. Go to the “Scripts” folder and find the “LiteTouch.vbs” file to start Litetouch.

When Litetouch has loaded, you have to select the “Sysprep and Capture” task you created earlier.

When selected, click Next and choose “Capture an image of this reference computer”. Now you have to enter a name for the wim file you want to create.
Continue and the MDT should do everything for you. First, it will run Sysprep, then the computer will restart and boot to Litetouch and create a copy of your operating system.
If everything goes perfectly, you are finished and can import the wim file to your operating system in the deployment workbench. The captured file can be found in ServerNameDeploymentShare$Captures.

Typical problems
If something went wrong before or during the Sysprep, I have some fixes that may help you out.

A typical error looks like this:Expected image state is Image_State_Generalize_Reseal_to_OOBE, actual image state is Image_State_Complete, sysprep did not succeed. Failure 6192, Litetouch deployment failed, return code = -2147467259 0x80004005

First of all, I would try to do a change in the registry so open up “Regedit” and go to:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionSetup”
Now open “ImageState” and change the value to “IMAGE_STATE_GENERALIZE_RESEAL_TO_OOBE”.

If the registry fix doesn’t work, try to remove any personal apps that are included in Windows 10.

If you just want to remove all apps, you can do this:
Run PowerShell and type in this command to remove all Windows 10 apps:
Get-AppXProvisionedPackage -online | Remove-AppXProvisionedPackage –online

Want to keep your drivers?
The default settings for Sysprep is to generalize your Windows 10 image by removing all drivers. If you don’t want this to happen and keep the drivers, you can edit this registry key in your client PC before you run sysprep:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionSetupSysprepSettingssppnp set PersistAllDeviceInstalls to 1.

What is Lite-Touch Deployment

Lite Touch Deployment requires some user interaction. Since it requires minimum infrastructure, it can be installed from a network share or media using an optical disc or USB flash drive. Moreover, for deploying the operating system and applications, it is necessary to follow software and computer configuration prerequisites according to the Microsoft quick start guide.

Furthermore, the major steps in Lite Touch deployment are as follows.

  • Obtain the required software

(MDT 2013, Windows ADK for Windows 8.1, Windows 8.1 distribution files, Device drivers required for the target computer, WDG-CLI-01, Device drivers required for the reference computer, WDG-REF-01)

  • Prepare the MDT environment
  • Configure MDT to create the reference computer
  • Deploy Windows 1 and capture an image of the reference computer
  • Configure MDT to deploy Windows 8.1 to the target computer
  • Deploy the captured image of the reference computer to the target computer.

What is Zero-Touch Deployment

Zero Touch Deployment is a fully automated deployment scheme. Therefore, this installation does not require any user interaction. However, it requires a continuous network connection to the distribution point.

Zero Touch Deployment requires installation using Configuration Manager of various software such as Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1), SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 Cumulative Update 6 (CU6), Windows 8.1, System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager, Microsoft .NET Framework version 3.5 with SP1, Windows PowerShell version 2.0, Windows Pre installation Environment (Windows PE), which is included in Configuration Manager, Networking services, including Domain Name System (DNS) and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), and Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS).

The major steps in Zero Touch Deployment are as follows.

  1. Prepare prerequisite infrastructure
  2. Prepare the MDT environment
  3. Create and configure a task sequence to create a reference computer
  4. Deploy Windows 1 and Capture an image of the reference computer
  5. Create and configure a task sequence to deploy the target computer
  6. Deploy the captured image of the reference computer to the target computer

In addition to the above deployment types, there is another called User Driven Deployment. It requires manual intervention to respond to installation prompts such as passwords, machine names, language setting, etc. The Zero touch and User Driven types require the support of Microsoft System Center infrastructure.

Difference Between Lite-Touch and Zero-Touch Deployment

Definition

Lite Touch deployment is a type of deployment that provides technology for deploying Windows OS and Microsoft Office and requires minimum user interaction while Zero Touch deployment is a fully automated deployment scheme that provides technology for deploying Windows OS and Microsoft Office. Thus, this is the main difference between Lite-Touch and Zero-Touch Deployment.

User Interaction

Another difference between Lite-Touch and Zero-Touch Deployment is that the Lite Touch deployment requires a limited user interaction while Zero Touch deployment does not require user interaction.

Infrastructure

Furthermore, Lite Touch requires minimum infrastructure while Zero Touch Deployment requires a persistent network connection.
